Using a voxelised system to determine modularity and to drive the design, the Youth Hub takes inspiration from gothic architecture for its spatial qualities and construction techniques. 3d-printed concrete forms the primary structural material for the building; ribbed vaulting forms the core of the building’s structural logic. The combination of these two principals allows for maximal structural performance with a minimal use of concrete. By using vaulting—where components are all in compression—the concrete members do not require reinforcement, reducing the material and construction complexity for the main structure. By using ribbed vaulting, less intensive and expensive materials, like wood, are incorporated into the structure of the building where the structural performance of concrete is not required. Through the use of 3d printing, the concrete structure is easily optimised to reduce material usage as required by the structure, while still conforming to the general formal and aesthetic qualities of the design. Compared to traditional building techniques, the building to also achieve a greater complexity of connections between different-sized modules. This is made possible by 3d printing and the ease of telling the printer to make a myriad of different components compared to that of a human. On-site fabrication for this project operates in two parts: wood processing and 3d-printing. The wood factory takes in lumber and blank clt panels and mills them down to make the various floor slabs and timber components. The print factory takes in dry concrete ingredients, mixes them and pipes them to several robots which prints out the various structural components. +0000 Evan Dodds https://evandodds.net/Robotic-Masonry-Project Robotic Masonry Project 2022 with Obinna Ekezie, Jenny Li, Natasha Louie, Sam McMillan, Neve Toth This project focused on the collaboration between human and robot to create a multifunctional, human-scale pod that can be deployed in a multitude of spaces. By using robots to place the bricks, more complex geometries can more easily be achieved than if humans are placing the bricks. This project sought to use a robot in combination with multiple brick sizes to better follow the curvature of catenary arches. Through human-robot interaction, this type of masonry can be more easily achieved than if humans were to attempt such a project alone. While the implementation of the project was unsatisfactory—by constructing the arch on its side and in parts, the core concept remains a feasible avenue for including robotics in masonry projects. country recognizes and treats its minority groups. At the forefront of this reflection the country seeks to reconcile its historic and ongoing treatment of indigenous peoples. Other groups such as Black and Asian Canadians have also awoken and deserve to have their voices and stories heard. How can Canada start to reposition the Anglo-European narrative that it has held onto for so long? How can it shift to a more expansive narrative that recognises the validity of all peoples and their valuable contributions to Canada? Olympic Plaza exists as the centre point of public space in Calgary. Its construction was an important civic moment for the city that allowed people to contribute to its construction and espouse their civic pride. Despite this moment, the park has failed to live up to its promise of being the site where all citizens could come together and feel safe as one community. The Serendipity Project seeks to redefine Olympic Plaza to reflect the current context of the city. Calgary today is a diverse mixture of peoples originating from around the world. Calgary today is looking to confront issues of past inequities and build a better future for the city. The Serendipity Project reimagines Olympic Plaza as the living room of Calgary: a place where everyone, regardless of background or social status, can come together to share stories. This redevelopment—a space for people to connect with fellow citizens to remark on and appreciate the contributions of all—will engender pride and highlight that Calgary is indeed a great place to 05:56:30 +0000 Evan Dodds https://evandodds.net/Museum-for-Dialogue Museum for Dialogue 2021 with Brendan Webb The Museum for Dialogue is a building that looks to strengthen our society by encouraging personal engagement with others who we may not normally engage with. Inspiration for the museum comes from the increasing schisms and divisions confronting our society; it is intended to be a landmark for public discourse within the city. It is a place where the spectrum of opinions on topics important to public discourse are explored through various media: from presentations to videos to more traditional exhibitions. Underlying this museum is the idea that our society becomes stronger when everyone participates in, and contributes to, exploring and addressing the problems we face. There is a gradient of public discourse within the museum with a large shell - or agora - being the zenith. Public plazas on the west and east have spatial gestures for discussion, that look to draw passersby into the environment of the museum. A permanent gallery on the first floor of the museum acts as preparation for visitors of the museum to understand the functioning of the main portion of the museum. The main agora space above the first floor acts as a device to bring people together under one roof, facilitating interaction and discussion. It is through these interactions that the museum’s visitors can participate in, and contribute to, the discourse of the museum while also gaining understanding of the other facets of that discourse. This has resulted in the creation of systems and common elements of design that work to make it as easy as possible for corporate interests to build buildings. As a result of this, the appearance and functionality of these buildings has converged to the point where buildings all look essentially the same. Buildings of today lack the soul and character and expression of those who inhabit them, and instead pursue unobtrusiveness. The boring building seeks to redefine and democratise the occupation of our workspaces. It looks to open up the colonisation and adaptation of our workspaces as we see fit. +0000 Evan Dodds https://evandodds.net/Integration-Vessels Integration Vessels 2020 A temporary refuge in the prairie, this project creates a small retreat site for a local NGO in Calgary that supports the settlement of immigrants and refugees in the city. The primary function of the project is to direct the integration of the organisation’s clientele into both the culture and landscape of Calgary, as well as Canada. While the primary function is for the site to be used by refugees, the intent is that the site allows for a range of people to visit and create a space that fosters cross-cultural understanding and 06:15:13 +0000 Evan Dodds https://evandodds.net/Origami-Acoustic-Partition Origami Acoustic Partition 2020with Sam Baril, Caleb Derksen, Dan Howard, Ashley Hu The Origami Acoustic Partition is a prototype for exploring how to analyse and measure the impacts of acoustics on a space and how products can be designed to minimise those impacts. Developed over one semester, the team used a model of the Calgary Building Design Lab to simulate and analyse how sound propagates through a large, open student studio space in the building. Taking this initial analysis, two initial interventions to control the acoustics of the space were developed. One intervention looked at creating a manoeuvrable pod-like partition system and how the shape of that can best direct sound to prevent it from spilling into the surrounding space. The other intervention looked at creating a ceiling baffle system utilising origami to explore how the shape and area of the baffle can improve sound absorption in the space. From the initial proposed acoustic interventions, a third intervention was developed that combined goals and lessons learned from the first two. The resulting origami acoustic partition arose from the desire to create a deployable, manoeuvrable, and easily manipulated partition system that allows the system to easily be deployed to support the frequently changing needs of an open student studio space. To validate the acoustic performance of the resulting origami partition, digital simulations were run to analyse how the partition should absorb and deflect sound.
